What to buy

Magic: The Gathering | Star Trek

Verdict: Buy Standard-legal UB set. Play Booster $6.99, Collector $37.99, Bundle $69.99 (MSRP). Buy for drafting/Trek fans; skip sealed speculation.

Good gift for: Star Trek fans and anyone who drafts with friends: a Bundle ($69.99 MSRP) or a few Play Boosters, not sealed boxes bought to speculate on.

Pre-order on Amazon

Star Trek Commander Decks (Federation Fleet, Landing Party, Klingon Fury, We Are the Borg)

Verdict: Buy Four decks at $74.99, Collector's Editions $159.99 MSRP. NerdSnack reports regular decks preordering near MSRP and Collector's Editions well above it — buy regular, skip CE at markup.

Good gift for: Commander players, especially Trek fans: a regular $74.99 deck is ready to play out of the box (skip the marked-up Collector's Editions).

Value at MSRP

Simple arithmetic from Wizards' MSRPs, so you can compare the boxes:

If you want to collect the signed cards or the surge foil Booster Fun, that is Collector Booster territory; for drafting or a first taste of the set, Play Boosters, a Bundle or Draft Night are the cheaper way in. Prices in stores often fall after release, so preordering mainly makes sense if you want the product on day one.
